스웨덴 왕립과학원은 9일 리튬이온배터리를 개발하고 상용화한 공로로 존 굿이너프, 스탠리 위팅엄, 아키라 요시노 3인을 노벨화학상 수상자로 선정했다.

올해 노벨 물리학상은 우주의 진화와 거대한 우주에서 우리 지구의 위치에 대한 이해를 넓힌 천문 물리학자들에게 돌아갔다. 제임스 피블스 미국 프린스턴대 명예교수와 미셸 마요르∙디디에 쿠엘로 스위스 제네바대 교수가 그 주인공이다.

스웨덴 왕립과학원 노벨상위원회는 8일(현지시간) "피블스 교수는 우주의 진화 이론인 빅뱅이론에 유력한 증거로 활용되는 물리 우주론의 이론적 발견을 이룬 공로로, 마요르 교수와 쿠엘로 교수는 태양계와 유사한 항성 주위를 도는 외계 행성을 발견한 공로가 인정됐다"고 설명했다

The trio will share the prize for their work on "the development of lithium ion batteries," according to the Nobel committee.
