Futuristic ‘Tower of the Sun’ Building Mimics Kazakhstan Flag with a Window to Ishim River

Taking inspiration from the country’s flag, Fundamental Architects and Omega Render are proposing a futuristic new building in Kazakhstan. Spanning the width of the Ishim River in Astana, the building’s circular cutout both provides views downriver and is a subtle nod toward the country’s national emblem. The concept is one of three proposals that BI GROUP, the country’s largest developer, is considering for the site.

카자흐스탄 국기에 착안한 친환경 제로에너지 건축물 '태양의 타워'     이 나라의 국기에서 영감을 받아, 펀더멘탈 건축가 오메가 렌더는 카자흐스탄에 미래 지향적인 새 건축물을 제안하고 있다.  수도인 아스타나의 이심강 폭을 가로지르는 이 건물의 원형 컷아웃은 강 하류의 경관을 제공하며 국가 상징성을 명확히 제시하고 있다. 이 디자인 개념은 카자흐스탄 국내 최대 개발사인 BI GROUP이 검토하고 있는 세 가지 제안 중 하나이다. 이 '태양의 타워'는 수도의 중심부에 자리하고 있으며, 주택, 사무실, 호텔과 상업 공간 등 다목적 빌딩으로 구성되어 있다.  75,000m2 면적을 차지하는 이 빌딩은 보행자와 자전거 다리가 포함될 것이다. 지붕 테라스 또한 일반인에게 접근이 용이하게 설계되어 있다. 아스타나의 광활한 풍경을 즐기기 위한 새로운 전망대도 설치된다.. 공간의 사용의 최적화를 결정할 때 카자흐스탄의 국기를 활용했다. 강가에 있는 이 건축물의 또 어떻게 시야의 막힘 없이 공간을 활용할 것인지 이해할 필요가 있었다.  국기의 파란 부분과 그리고 태양처럼 엄청난 컷아웃을 활용하기. 그들은 감쪽같이 이 같은 문제를 해결하기 위해 이런 문화적 상징을 사용했다. 블라디미르 코노발로프 건축가는 "이 건물 모양은 중앙에 노란색 원이 있는 파란색 직사각형 캔버스인 카자흐스탄 국기에서 영감을 얻었다"고 말했다. "이 건물은 주요 고속도로와 궁전 사이의 전망선에 전략적으로 배치되어 있기 때문에, 고속도로를 운전하는 동안 대통령궁을 향한 시야를 차단하지 않는다. 그것은 여전히 카자흐스탄 문화와 전통에서 중요한 상징인 태양을 상징하는 탑의 원을 통해 볼 수 있다. The Tower of the Sun sits in the heart of the capital city and will be a mixed-use building comprised of residences, offices, a hotel, and commercial spaces. The 75,000-square-meter (approximately 807,000-square-foot) building will include a pedestrian and cyclist bridge on the lower level. The roof terrace would also be publicly accessible, providing a new viewing platform to take in expansive views of Astana.

    

When deciding how to make the best use of the space, Fundamental Architects turned to Kazakhstan’s flag as a way to turn a problem into a solution. With the building site located on the river, they needed to understand how to use the space without completely blocking the view. Using the main structure as the blue part of the flag and the enormous cutout as the sun, they cleverly employed these cultural symbols to resolve the issue.

“The building shape took its inspiration from the national flag of Kazakhstan—a blue rectangular canvas with a yellow circle in the center,” shared Vladimir Konovalov of Fundamental Architects. “The building is strategically positioned on the view line between the main highway and the palace, so while driving on a highway we do not block the view towards the Presidential Palace. It is still visible through a circle opening in the tower, which represents a sun—an important symbol in Kazakh culture and traditions.”

The structure will take advantage of its strategic location on the river and will use hydroelectric power to create a “near net-zero energy” building. Now we just need to wait and see if this futuristic design based on cultural cues will be selected for construction.
