Britain experienced its longest spell without generating electricity from coal over the Easter weekend, the National Grid has announced.
Using a combination of gas, nuclear, wind, solar, impors, biomass and hydro, the UK was powered for a total of 90 hours and 45 minutes from Thursday until yesterday.
The near-four day stretch is the longest period since the Industrial Revolution, with the National Grid describing the feat as a 'modern record for Great Britain'.
During the same period, eco-activists brought parts of London to a standstill with held climate change demonstrations at Oxford Street and Parliament Square.
Plans to phase out all of Britain's coal power plants by 2025 have been announced by the Government in a bid to cut greenhouse gases
National Grid tweeted: 'Generation during this time was met by: Gas 42%, Nuclear 23%, Wind 12%, Solar 11%, Imports 7%, Biomass 4%, Large Hydro 1%, Storage 0%.'
It broke the previous longest period of zero coal power of 76 hours and 10 minutes, which was set in April 2018.
Duncan Burt, director of operations at National Grid, lauded the achievement as 'a really big deal'.
'It's all about the sunny weather we've been seeing, so energy demand is low. There has been lots of lovely solar power off the panels too,' he told BBC Radio 5 Live
