'Mom, status is green': NASA scientists celebrate as New Horizons probe phones home to confirm record-breaking New Year's Eve flyby of the farthest and most primitive object humankind has EVER visited

New Horizons made its closest approach to Ultima Thule at 12:33 a.m. (ET) Jan 1st, 4 billion miles from Earth

Hundreds of NASA team members gathered in Maryland for a countdown for the flyby

The crowd rang in 2019 at midnight then 33 minutes later celebrated again, the appointed time for New Horizons' closest approach to Ultima Thule

At 10:31am this morning the craft 'phoned home' to confirm flyby was a success   

First color images will emerge in hours and be released tomorrow, though it will take 20 months to get all data, and highest resolution images will not be beamed down until February 

뉴 호라이즌,  인류 역사상 가장 먼 곳에서 집에 전화걸다 "맘, 여기 상황은 그린!"   뉴 호라이즌은 1월 1일 오전 12시 33분(ET)에 지구에서 40억 마일 떨어진 울티마 툴레에 가장 근접했다. 나사의 과학자들은 오늘 아침 태양계의 생성에 대한 실마리를 얻기 위한 임무를 띠고 지구로부터 수십억 마일 떨어진 32km 길이의 우주 암석에 근접해 새로운 호라이즌 탐사선이 태양계의 가장 바깥 지역에 도달했음을 확인한 후 축하하고 있었다. 뉴 호라이즌스 탐사선은 오늘 오전 12시 33분에 카이퍼 벨트의 미지의 심장부에 있는 '제3의 구역'에 도달할 예정이었으나 NASA는 오전 10시 31분이 되어서도 성공했다는 확인을 받지 못했다.  'MOM'으로 알려진 뉴 호라이즌의 미션 운영 매니저인 앨리스 보우먼은 미션 엔지니어로부터 업데이트를 받았고, 그들은 하나하나씩 그들의 상태를 녹색으로 불렀다. Jubilant NASA scientists were celebrating this morning after confirmation their New Horizons probe has reached the solar system's outermost region, flying close to a space rock 20 miles long and billions of miles from Earth on a mission to gather clues about the creation of the solar system.

The New Horizons probe was slated to reach the 'third zone' in the uncharted heart of the Kuiper Belt at 12:33 a.m. this morning ET - but NASA did not receive confirmation it was a success until 10:31am. 

Alice Bowman, the New Horizons Mission Operations Manager, known as 'MOM' received the updates from mission engineers, who one by one called in their status as green. 

Stern revealed the last picture the craft took before the flyby, and promised better images tomorrow

'We have a healthy spacecraft, we have just completed the most distant flyby,' she said.
