Iran's Massive Earthquake Kills 341, Injures 5,346

7.3-magnitude earthquake shook the western province of Kermanshah and the regions bordering Iraq on Sunday night.


Update (Monday 10:28 GMT): According to ISNA, at least 341 people were killed and an estimated 5,346 injured in Iran.





The quake was felt in several provinces as well as in Baghdad. The epicenter of the killer quake was 11 km under the city of Ezgeleh in Salas-Babajani County of Kermanshah, the Iranian Seismographic Center said.


The quake struck at 9:48 pm (local time) across Kermanshah and was followed by a series of aftershocks in the border regions between Iran and Iraq, ISNA reported.


The spokesman for Iran's National Disaster Management Organization, Behnam Saeedi said that rescue and relief teams are searching for people trapped under the rubble.


The hardest hit region was Sarpol-Zahab County in Kermanshah, close to the Iraqi frontier, and its main hospital has been severely damaged.


President Hassan Rouhani is also scheduled to travel to Kermanshah on Tuesday, according to IRIB.
