SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Rotem Co., a machinery unit of Hyundai Motor Group, has won an order for subway cars in India worth 177.1 billion won (US$159 million), paving the way for a greater presence in the rapidly growing economy, the company said Tuesday.


Hyundai Rotem will build unmanned rolling stock amounting to 96 cars for the Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA), with delivery scheduled from April 2019 to July 2020, the company said in a statement.


The subway cars will be used in the 20.7 kilometer-long route that runs through Ahmedabad from east to west in the state of Gujarat, the statement said.


With the contract, the company's unmanned subway car orders have exceeded 2,000 units, including 1,681 to overseas markets, it said.


Hyundai Rotem manufactures railway systems, defense systems and plant equipment.
