The Staten Island Advance time-lapse video below shows construction of one span of the new Goethals Bridge that connects Elizabeth, N.J., with Staten Island. ABC Eyewitness News reports that the original 89-year-old span is being replaced by twin spans. The first span constructed, carrying vehicles eastbound into New York, opened to traffic on Saturday, June 10, 2017. The westbound span carrying vehicles to New Jersey is scheduled to open in 2018.
The new spans will each have three 12-foot lanes, along with 12-foot outer shoulders and 5-foot inner shoulders. According to the news agency, the $1.5 billion cable-stayed crossing project is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s first new bridge opening since the Bayonne Bridge was completed in 1931.
