Qatar’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (QMTC) has invited tenders for developing a public transport ferry terminal, Zawya Projects reported.
“The ferry terminal is coming up at Doha Port and will be used to dock cruise ships. It will take at least four months for the tender process to be completed”, said a ministry official.
Documents are available till 19 December 2016 along with a tender bond for 1,000,000 Qatari Riyals ($274,639), according to a notice on QMTC’s website.
A 2013 report in online news portal Doha News said that in order to boost tourism revenue, Qatar Tourism Authority has plans to convert the old Doha Port into a cruise terminal once commercial operations are shifted to the new Hamad Port in 2016.
In October 2016, local English language daily The Peninsula quoted the Minister of Transport and Communications, Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti, as saying that QMTC would execute two main parts of Doha Port’s development project including the main canal and the port maintenance while the body responsible for the construction would be named later. He said that drilling and development works on the port site would start early April 2017 with a budgetary cost of about 2 billion riyals ($544 million).
The Doha Port will be completely shut for navigation by March 2017 and Hamad Port will begin operations by end December 2016, the report added.
