Video | Sunderland bridge deck construction
14 OCTOBER, 2016 BY EMILY ASHWELL
The first section of the bridge deck for Sunderland’s New Wear Crossing has been launched.
The video shows hydraulic jacks being used to slowly manoeuvre the steel frame, pulling the deck between 10m and 15m per hour. It is resting on temporary supports within the riverbed, awaiting assembly of the second phase of the deck.
The bridge’s main centre piece will be a 105m high A-frame pylon, which will arrive on site this winter. Cables between the pylon and deck will be secured next year, before temporary supports are removed.
The bridge is being constructed by the FVB joint venture, formed by Farrans Construction and Victor Buyck Steel Construction.
“Pulling a 2,500t section of bridge out over the middle of the river is not easy and takes a lot of engineering and preparation. We have a variety of UK and international experts working on the project who are bringing together their skills to make sure everything goes ahead as planned,” said FVB project director Stephen McCaffrey ahead of the works.
