These fearless divers are some of the most extreme athletes in the world, plunging 88ft into a murky lake for the sake of glory.

Putting their bodies on the line, the world’s top cliff divers took turns leaping from a rocky cliff edge at Possum Kingdom Lake, a reservoir west of Dallas, Texas, on the third stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

Male and female competitors performed four dives before the top eight in each division moved on to the finals for a chance to be named the best in their sport.

The sport requires a hearty soul and a head for heights, as the distance between the platform and the water’s surface is enough to make most people squeamish.

But these daredevils showed no signs of fear as they performed graceful twists and spins in front of judges.

Reigning tour champion Gary Hunt, from Southampton, continued to dominate as he finished first and set a new world record at the Texas event, which was delayed due to severe weather.

The 30-year-old is a former Commonwealth Games competitor and a legend of high diving, claiming four of the last five Red Bull championships.

So far he has won all three stops so far this season, putting him in first place in the overall table

At the Texas event he scored a new world record points total of 533.90, putting him in prime position to win a fifth title.

After his latest win, Gary told RedBullCliffDiving.com: ‘One of the things I love about cliff diving is it’s not so rigid.

You have to be flexible and willing to dive when you’re not 100 per cent prepared. I’m really happy to have come through and put in a good performance here.’
