The Automated Construction of Expeditionary Structures (ACES) project is developing the capability to print custom-designed expeditionary structures on-demand, in the field, using locally available materials and minimum personnel.
Currently, a prototype printer for creating wall test sections is under development. Our CERL team is also conducting materials research on concrete mix designs to determine the best mix design for successful use in the concrete printer as well as other research into the materials, capabilities and structures.
The path forward is to create a fully-functioning experimental concrete printer and demonstrate it in 2017. If testing proves successful, the Army could potentially add a concrete printer to the technologies available to our Combat Engineers.
