Parsons Overseas Limited has been awarded a $408m (AED1.5bn) project management contract for the expansion of Sharjah International Airport on Tuesday.

The expansion of the airport will include the construction of a number of facilities, including the expansion of the passenger terminal as well as roads in the surrounding area.

The contract will include the pre-design, design and construction phases, and the delivery phase of the project.

Upon completion, the expansion is expected to increase the number of passengers to 25 million by 2027.

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the airport authority invited seven companies to submit their bids, according to Sharjah 24.

Sharjah International Airport Authority conducted an analytical study to evaluate the offers presented in the presence of representatives from the Department of Public Works and the Department of Civil Aviation in Sharjah.

The agreement was signed between Sharjah International Airport Authority and Parsons Overseas Limited in the main airport management building on Tuesday in the presence of HE Sheikh Khalid bin Issam Al Qassimi, president of Sharjah Civil Aviation Department, Ali Salem Al Madfaa, chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority, Director of the Department of Civil Aviation, and among others.

Al Madfaa said that the expansion project will be an important addition to Sharjah International Airport, which continues to serve an increasing number of passengers each year. The expansion will also support airline traffic and shipping for the airport.

Gary Adams, President of Parsons Overseas Limited in the Middle East and Africa, said: "We are honoured to be selected to manage the new expansion project of Sharjah International Airport, which will significantly contribute to improving and increasing the existing travel options from the emirate, as well as [support] economic growth and job creation.”
