Berlin Film Fest: Hungarian ‘On Body And Soul’ Wins Golden Bear – Complete Winners List

UPDATE 11.58AM PT: Hungarian drama On Body and Soul has picked up the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 67th Berlin Film Festival. The love story, which is set in a slaughterhouse in Budapest, is written and directed by Ildiko Enyedi. It follows two damaged souls who develop a spiritual kinship with one another. Berlin Jury President Paul Verhoeven said that the entire jury “fell in love with this movie,” which is largely about fears, inhibitions and opening up to others. Monika Mecs, Andras Muhi and Erno Mesterhazy produce. On Body and Soul sees Enyedi’s return to the international scene after her 1989 title My Twentieth Century, which also played In Competition at Berlinale. Films Boutique is handling international sales for the pic.

The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to Alain Gomis’ African drama Félicité. The French-Belgian-Senegalese-German-Lebanese co-production focuses on a Congolese bar singer who goes on a frantic search for her teenage son through the streets of Kinshasa, Congo. Upon accepting the award, he reminded the audience that “we are all building something.” In 2012, Gomis’ Aujourd’hui played In Competition at Berlinale.

Polish director Agnieszka Holland picked up the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize for crime thriller Pokot (Spoor). Maggie Gyllenhaal presented her with the award and when Holland took to stage, she said: “We are living in uncertain times. We need movies which are brave, important and that touch the subjects which are important to our planet.” Pokot (Spoor) follows an elderly woman who lives alone in a valley where mysterious crimes are committed. The wintery whodunnit played with critics at the fest. Oscar-nominated Holland was nominated for a Golden Bear in Berlin in 1981 with her pic Goraczka (Dzieje Jednego Pocisku).

Aki Kaurismaki picked up the Silver Bear for Best Director for The Other Side of Hope, a title that was largely expected to earn a nod at the fest this year. The Finnish helmer is a regular at Cannes, with projects such as The Man Without A Past and Le Havre both winning on the Croisette. Kaurismaki, who recently said that this film would be his last in the director’s chair, made a brief speech upon receiving the award. He simply said: “Ladies and gentleman, thank you very much.”

Diego Luna gave South Korean Actress Kim Min-hee the award for Silver Bear for Best Actress saying, “you can’t stop watching her.” She stars in Hong Sang-hoo’s On The Beach At Night Alone, about a young actress who wanders the beach alone while pondering her relationship. Austrian actor Georg Friedrich, who’s had roles in pics such as The Piano Teacher and Faust, was honored with the Silver Bear for Best Actor for his role in Bright Nights. The film, directed by Thomas Arsian, is a road movie about the journey of a father, who while trying to say goodbye to his own father, attempts to repair his relationship with his own son.

Sebastian Lelio’s A Fantastic Woman, another title which was largely expected to earn plaudits this evening, was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. The project, which has proved a hit amongst critics at the fest and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, is written by Gonzalo Maza. The Spanish-language pic follows a waitress and singer and an older man who are in love and planning for the future. After he suddenly falls ill and dies, she is forced to confront his family and society and fight again to show them she is strong, forthright and fantastic. “This is a film about love and loving people and loving each other,” said Maza, who then dedicated the award to his late father. Lelio thanked long-time producer Pablo Larrain and said: “I can only agree with the idea that we have to fight the dark ages with beauty, elegance and poetry.”

Earlier on in the ceremony, fest director Dieter Kosslick took to the stage to offer up a political message saying “the world is in a bad way.” He pointed to the recent news of German journalist Deniz Yucel, who was arrested in Turkey and is being detained on terror charges. Noting that he was the first German journo to be arrested and accused of such a thing, Kosslick sent a message to Turkey: “We are aware of what’s going on and we hope he will be released soon.”

PREVIOUS 9.55AM PT: The 67th Berlin Film Festival draws to a close this evening as the awards ceremony is about to kick off in the German capital. Dutch director and screenwriter Paul Verhoeven heads up the jury, which includes Maggie Gyllenhaal and Diego Luna, and they’ll be awarding Golden and Silver Bears to a dozen categories. Berlinale is renowned for being a festival that doesn’t eschew from socio-political sentiment: Last year, the Syrian refugee crisis loomed heavy throughout the event and this year, President Donald Trump and his administration took a hit during the fest while its line-up offered a raft of politically charged international works.

Films that have generated buzz amongst festgoers include Sebastian Lelio’s A Fantastic Woman and Aki Kaurismaki’s The Other Side of Hope. Lelio’s title, which is produced by Chilean helmer Pablo Larrain (Neruda, Jackie), was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. His pic Gloria won a Jury Prize for director in Berlin in 2013 as well as a Silver Bear for Best Actress. Finnish director Kaurismaki is typically a Cannes darling, with projects such as The Man Without A Past and Le Havre winning on the Croisette. A few days ago the Finnish helmer announced that refugee drama The Other Side of Hope would be his last turn behind the lense. Interestingly, last year’s Berlinale Golden Bear winner was Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire At Sea, a refugee crisis doc that is nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar this year.
