NAJIB REITERATES COMMITMENT TO TRANSFORM PUBLIC TRANSPORT, MEETS COMMUTERS’ NEEDS

KUALA LUMPUR: Land public transport system and policies must be more commuter-centric and responsive to demographic changes, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.
He said commuters must be convinced that the country’s public transportation system could serve their needs, and get them to their destinations reliably and comfortably.
“The country’s urban rail connectivity today demonstrates the government’s seriousness and commitment to transform the land public transport industry.
“Even in challenging economic times, development projects under the 11th Malaysia Plan remain unaffected.
“Key infrastructure projects like the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and the High-Speed Rail (HSR) link to Singapore are still going ahead,” he said when opening Land Public Transport Commission’s (SPAD) five-year report launch, exhibition and symposium at KL Convention Centre here today.
The HSR, he said, would be one of Malaysia’s biggest infrastructure projects and was poised to be a game changer.
Najib added that the developments in the HSR would deliver spillover socioeconomic benefits to the communities in towns along its alignment, opening up jobs and business opportunities and unlocking transit-oriented development.
“The investments made in land public transport infrastructure projects such as LRT, MRT, HSR, provide a wide-ranging catalyst effect on our economy and will bring much benefits to society, both immediately and in the longer term.
“You have my assurance that the government will continue to address our land public transport needs through holistic and inclusive solutions, in towns and cities across Malaysia.”
Also present were Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, Performance Management and Delivery Unit chief executive officer Datuk Idris Jala.
