오만, GCC 철도 프로젝트 연기 Oman to 'delay' trans-Gulf railway project

2,117km 6개국 통합 철도 사업 난관 봉착

UAE 에티하드 철도사업 2단계도 중단 상태

The 2,117km GCC rail network aims to connect Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Oman. 

  오만이 GCC 6개국 철도 네크워크 사업을 연기하기로 결정했으며 이로서 스페인 Tecnicas Reunidas 컨소시엄과의 PMC 계약도 최소됐다고 현지 언론이 보도했다.

그러나 모하메드 알 슈아일리 교통통신부 국장은 어떠한 관련 프로젝트도 취소되지 않았으며 타 GCC국가들이 프로젝트를 잠시 중단한 것 처럼 다만 연기될 뿐이라고 언급했다.

올 1월 UAE의 국내 철도네트워크 조성사업인 '에티하드 레일 프로젝트'가 2단계 입찰이 중지된 바 있다.

에티하드 2단계 노선은 사우디와 오만의 국경과 연결되어 있다.

알 슈아일리 국장은 언제 재개될 지는 말할 수 없으나 프로젝트의 다른 지역의 문제가 해결되는 경우 언제라도 다시 시작할 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.

이로서 애당초 2018년에 완공하기로 되어 있는 154억불 규모의 2,117km GCC 6개국 철도 네크워크 사업은 예정 공기에 마치기는 어렵게 됐다. 

이는 사우디를 비롯해 GCC국가에 몰아친 저유가로 인한 재정 빈곤 상태와도 아울러 밀접한 연관이 있다.

Oman to 'delay' trans-Gulf railway project

Oman has reportedly decided to delay its rail project connecting the Sultanate with the rest of the Gulf countries to meet the schedule of other Gulf countries.

The contract with a private consultancy company to manage the rail project has also been cancelled, The Times of Oman reported. 

Mohammed Al Shuaili, director of the Minister of Transport and Communications office, was quoted as saying, "The ministry of transport and communications has not cancelled the project but only delayed it as other Gulf countries have decided to stop work on the project."

In January, Etihad Rail - the developer and operator of the UAE's $11bn national rail network - said it has suspended the tendering process for stage two of the project.

Stage two involves linking the country to the Saudi border at Ghweifat and the Omani border at Al Ain.

Al Shuaili wouldn't confirm when the project could be relaunched but told the newspaper: "Whenever the image becomes clear in the other part of the project, the ministry can assign the company to start working on it agagin."

The multi-billion dollar 2,117km GCC rail network - which aims to connect Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Oman - was earlier slated for a 2018 completion.
