   일본 북부 홋카이도(北海道)에서 남부 가고시마(鹿兒島)까지 연결되는 고속철도 홋카이도신칸센(新幹線)이 26일 개통했다.

JR홋카이도에 따르면 이날 혼슈(本主) 북쪽의 신아오모리(新靑森)역에서 홋카이도 남부의 신하코다테호쿠토(新函館北斗)역 사이 약 149㎞ 구간에서 고속철도 운행을 시작했다. 이 구간 공사 계획에서 실제 개통까지는 43년이 걸렸다.

이에 따라 일본 수도인 도쿄(東京)역에서 신하코다테호쿠토역까지 신칸센을 이용하면 4시간 2분 만에 도착할 수 있게 됐다.

신칸센은 이로써 규슈 남쪽의 가고시마추오(鹿兒島中央)역에서 신하코다테호쿠토역까지 2천326.3㎞(영업 거리 기준) 구간을 운행하게 됐다.

1964년 10월 1일 도카이도(東海道)신칸센 개통 이후 약 51년 반 만에 신칸센이 본토 북단 홋카이도에서부터 가장 남쪽에 있는 규슈까지를 관통(시코쿠<四國> 제외)해 연결하게 된 것이다.

홋카이도청 소재지인 삿포로(札晃)시에서 신하코다테호쿠토역을 잇는 구간은 2030년도 말까지 완성된다.

이날 신하코다테호쿠토역에는 오전 일찍부터 신칸센 첫차를 타려는 승객과 첫 열차 출발을 직접 보려는 주민들이 모여 장사진을 이뤘다. 또 하코다테시 등에는 홋카이도신칸센 개통을 계기로 국내외 관광객을 유치하기 위한 다양한 이벤트가 펼쳐졌다.

이시이 게이이치(石井啓一) 국토교통상은 신하코다테호쿠토역에서 열린 기념식에서 "홋카이도신칸센 개통이 지역 간 교류 활발화 및 지역경제 활성화에 크게 공헌하기를 기대한다"고 말했다.

Hokkaido shinkansen to begin operation on Saturday

TOKYO —

Operation of the long-anticipated Hokkaido shinkansen which will connect Shin-Hakodate Hokuto in Hokkaido with Shin-Aomori via the Seikan Tunnel will begin on Saturday. It will bring the bullet train service to Hokkaido for the first time.

Operated by JR Hokkaido and JR East, the line will link up with the existing Tohoku shinkansen line between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori.

JR officials said there will be 13 round trips per day. Ten of the 13 round trips between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate Hokuto will be operated by the fastest Hayabusa trains, as well as one round trip between Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture and Shin-Hakodate, Fuji TV reported.

The other two services will be Hayate trains traveling between Shin-Hakodate Hokuto and Shin-Aomori and also Morioka once a day. 

According to JR Hokkaido, the traveling time between Shin-Hakodate and Tokyo will be about 4 hours and 10 minutes. Currently, it takes 5 hours and 20 minutes to travel from Tokyo to Hakodate by taking the Tohoku shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori and transferring to an express train.
