카지노의 도시’ 마카오가 탈(脫)카지노라는 ‘통 큰 도박’을 감행 중이다. 영국 파이낸셜타임스(FT)는 중국 정부의 반부패 정책의 타격을 입은 마카오가 새로운 수익원을 찾아나서면서 때아닌 건설 붐이 일고 있다고 22일 보도했다. FT에 따르면 갤럭시 마카오는 수십억달러를 투자해 복합문화시설을 갖춘 리조트를 짓고 있다. 1기 공사가 거의 마무리 단계인 가운데, 가족 관광객을 겨냥한 2기 공사가 다음달 시작된다. 1350개의 객실이 새로 지어지고, 3000석 규모의 대형극장을 갖춘 영화관 등 엔터테인먼트 시설과 쇼핑센터가 현재의 2배로 늘어날 예정이다.
홍콩의 카지노운영회사 멜코크라운인터내셔널은 헐리우드 테마 공원을 올해 말 오픈할 계획이다. 마카오의 카지노 재벌 스탠리 호의 아들인 로렌스 호 SJM 홀딩스 사장은 올해 초 “이제 마카오에서 다양한 레저를 체험할 수 있게 될 것”이라고 포부를 밝힌 바 있다. 베네치안 호텔을 소유하고 있는 샌즈차이나는 ‘파리지엔’을 호텔의 새로운 컨셉으로 더할 계획이다. 에펠타워 등을 재현해 마치 파리의 한 가운데 서 있는 느낌이 들게 하는 것이다.
이들의 새로운 도전이 아직 매출로 이어지고 있지는 않는 가운데 분석가들은 이같은 변화를 낙관적으로 보고 있다. 애론 피셔 CLSA는 “리조트 건설 등에 들어간 비용은 약 5년 안에 회수할 수 있을 것”이라며 비록 1차 호텔 건설 붐 때 2년 걸린 것에 비해 긴 시간이지만 비관하지는 않았다. 마카오 카지노 관련 당국에 따르면 지난달 카지노 총 매출은 26억9000만달러로 지난해 같은달과 비교해 39% 급락했다. 월별 매출로는 사상 두번째로 큰 폭의 하락이다. 앞서 2월 매출도 전년동월 대비 49% 급락했다.(기사제휴=홍콩수요저널) [대한뉴스/박해준 기자] |

The gaming sector is due to add two large-scale developments in 2015, with more to come next year. This week James Packer’s Melco Crown announced a tie-up with Warner Bros and DC Comics for its Hollywood-themed casino project Studio City. The $3.2bn resort will target families and include a Batman ride, a 130m Ferris wheel, a 5,000-seat arena and an outlet of Ibiza nightclub Pacha. Galaxy Entertainment, the largest casino operator in Macau by revenue, is also poised to open the $2bn second phase of its main development, which will double its floorspace, while adding a skytop pool and an all-suite Ritz-Carlton Hotel. In 2016, two even more striking openings are due to launch, with Sheldon Adelson’s $2.7bn Paris-themed resort — complete with mock Eiffel Tower — adding to the Sands China portfolio. It already operates The Venetian, a mammoth homage to the Italian city, with canals and gondolas. The real test of Macau’s demand for the extravagant will come with the debut of Louis XIII, already dubbed the world’s most luxurious casino and hotel resort. The development is costing about $5m per hotel room, double the Macau average, and once complete guests will be ferried around in one of the hotel’s 30 Rolls-Royces.
