한화가 사상 최대 규모의 태양광 모듈 공급 계약을 성사시켰다. 한화큐셀은 2015년 4분기부터 2016년 말까지 1년여에 걸쳐 미국 2위 전력기업인 넥스트에라 에너지(NextEra Energy)에 총 1.5GW(기가와트)의 태양광 모듈을 공급하기로 하고 이같은 계약 체결 내용을 20일(현지시간) 미국 현지에서 발표했다. 1.5GW의 모듈 공급 계약은 태양광 업계에서 단일 계약으로는 단연 사상 최대 규모다. 그동안 기가와트 단위의 계약은 한 번도 없었던 것으로 알려졌다. 1.5GW의 모듈이 전부 설치되면 대구광역시 전체 인구(약 250만 명)가 사용할 수 있을 정도의 전력을 생산한다. 통상 최신 원자력발전소 1기가 설비용량 100만㎾ 정도로 원전 1.5기가 생산하는 전력량이다. 넥스트에라는 한화큐셀로부터 공급받는 모듈 전량을 미국 내에 건설 예정인 자체 태양광 발전소에 설치한다. 이번 계약에는 2017년 이후 넥스트에라가 짓는 태양광 발전소에도 한화큐셀의 모듈을 공급하기 위해 내년 여름부터 양사가 우선 협의한다는 내용도 포함됐다. 일회성 대형 계약이 아니라 향후 안정적인 제품 공급 루트와 사업 확장의 기회를 잡았다는 데 더 큰 의미가 있다고 한화는 설명했다. 업계에서는 이번 계약 성사에도 김승연 한화 회장의 '뚝심'이 크게 작용한 것으로 해석했다. 한화는 2010년 8월 솔라펌홀딩스를 인수하면서 태양광 사업에 진출했지만 이후 태양광 업계 업황은 매우 좋지 못했다. 유럽발 금융위기가 발목을 잡았고 유럽과 중국에서 수백 개 업체가 쓰러졌다. 김 회장은 태양광이 침체기에 접어들던 2011년 10월 그룹 창립기념일 기념사를 통해 "태양광과 같은 미래 신성장 사업은 장기적인 시각에서 투자하며 그룹의 새 역사를 이끌 소중한 토대로 키워가야 한다. 당장 눈앞의 이익이나 불확실한 사업환경에 일희일비할 게 아니라 '해낼 수 있다', '꼭 해낸다'는 믿음으로 묵묵히 추진해 나가야 할 것"이라고 강조한 바 있다. 한화는 몇 년간 극심한 침체기에도 태양광 투자를 지속했다. 2012년 독일 큐셀을 인수한 뒤 작년 말 한화솔라원과 합병했다. 셀 기준으로 세계 1위로 도약한 것은 물론 마침내 흑자로 전환시켰다. 김 회장은 특유의 현장 경영으로 이라크 비스마야 신도시 사업에도 공을 들인 결과, 최근 20억 달러 규모의 추가 수주를 따내는 데 성공한 바 있다. 남성우 한화큐셀 대표는 "한화솔라원과 통합을 계기로 세계 최대 규모의 생산능력을 갖춘 한화큐셀은 넥스트에라에 대한 대규모 모듈 공급계약을 통해 차별화된 기술력과 원가 경쟁력을 다시 한 번 인정받게 됐다"고 밝혔다. 선도 태양광 업체로서의 존재감을 알리면서 태양광 시장 개척의 포문을 연 것으로 평가된다. 알만도 피멘텔 넥스트에라 사장은 "세계 최대 신재생에너지 발전회사로서 대규모 태양광 발전사업에 지속적으로 투자할 계획"이라며 "친환경 태양광 글로벌 사업에 대한 비전을 함께 하는 한화큐셀은 최적의 파트너"라고 말했다. 협상 과정에서는 한화큐셀의 독일 기술혁신센터 고위 기술진이 직접 참여해 품질력을 넥스트에라 협상팀에 이해시켰다고 한다. 넥스트에라는 시가총액 기준으로 미국에서 두 번째 큰 전력회사로 연간 42GW의 전력을 생산하며 연간매출이 19조 원, 뉴욕증권거래소(NYSE) 시가총액이 50조 원에 달한다. 태양광 부문은 현재 900㎿ 규모인데 2016년까지 1.6GW 규모의 신규 태양광 발전소 건설을 추진 중이다.
