이슬람 수니파 극단주의 무장단체 이슬람 국가(IS)의 인질살해 협박 영상에 등장한 '지하드 존'의 신원을 확인했다고 미국 일간지 워싱턴포스트(WP)와 영국 BBC방송이 26일 보도했다.  이들 매체는 '지하드 존'의 본명이 '무함마드 엠와지'이며 쿠웨이트 태생으로 런던에서 자란 20대 중반의 영국인이라고 전했다. WP는 엠와지의 친구 등 지인들 증언을 인용해 그가 유복한 가정 출신으로, 집도 런던의 중산층 거주지역이며 그리니치에 있는 이슬람 사원에 기도를 드리러 가곤 했다고 전했다.   엠와지는 웨스트민스터대학에서 컴퓨터 프로그래밍을 전공했고 2012년께 시리아로 건너가 IS에 가담한 것으로 보인다고 이 신문은 설명했다. 엠와지의 친구들은 익명을 전제로 그가 친절한 성격에 옷을 잘 차려입는 것을 좋아했으며 이슬람교 믿음에 따라 생활했다고 밝혔다.  그의 친구들은 또 엠와지가 대학을 졸업한 뒤 탄자니아로 여행을 다녀오고 나서 극단주의에 빠진 것으로 보인다고 WP에 말했다.  BBC는 영국 정보당국이 엠와지의 신원을 알고 있었으나 작전상 이유로 이를 공개하지 않아왔다고 설명했다.   '지하드 존'은 지난해 8월 미국의 제임스 폴리와 스티븐 소트로프, 영국의 데이비드 헤인즈와 앨런 헤닝 등 서방 인질과 최근 참수당한 일본인 인질들의 살해 협박 및 참수 동영상에 검은 옷과 복면 차림으로 수차례 등장했던 인물이다. 런던 시경 대테러사령부 수장 리처드 월튼은 그러나 "현 시점에서 (지하드 존의) 신원을 확인해 주거나 그에 대한 조사 진행 상황을 밝힐 수 없다"고 영국 일간지 텔레그래프에 말했다.   미국 정부 관계자도 엠와지 관련 보도에 대한 언급을 거절했으며, 엠와지의 가족들도 인터뷰 요청에 응하지 않았다고 WP는 전했다.  (서울=연합뉴스) 권수현 김경윤 기자 inishmore@yna.co.kr

The masked Islamic State militant known as "Jihadi John", who 

has been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of Western 

hostages, has been named.

The BBC understands he is Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born British man in his mid-20s from west London, who was known to UK security services. They chose not to disclose his name earlier for operational reasons. Emwazi first appeared in a video last August, when he apparently killed the American journalist James Foley. He was later thought to have been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of US journalist Steven Sotloff, British aid worker David Haines, British taxi driver Alan Henning, and American aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter. 'The Beatles'   In each of the videos, the militant appeared dressed in a black robe with a black balaclava covering all but his eyes and top of his nose.  Speaking with a British accent, he taunted Western powers before holding his knife to the hostages' necks, appearing to start cutting before the film stopped. The victims' decapitated bodies were then shown.   Earlier this month, the militant featured in a video in which the Japanese journalist Kenji Goto appeared to be beheaded. Hostages released by IS said he was one of three British jihadists guarding Westerners abducted by the group in Syria. They were given the nicknames "John", "Paul" and "Ringo" by their captives, and were known collectively as "the Beatles".  http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-31637090
