Trump confirms Osama bin Laden's son Hamza killed in US counterterrorism operation

(CNN) - President Donald Trump in a statement on Saturday said late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden had been "killed in a United States counterterrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region."

도널드 트럼프 대통령은 25일 성명을 통해 알카에다 지도자 오사마 빈 라덴의 아들 함자 빈 라덴이 아프가니스탄/파키스탄 지역에서 미국의 대테러 작전에서 살해됐다고 밝혔다.

그는 작전이나 사망 경과에 대해서는 언급하지 않았다.

트럼프는 성명에서 "함자 빈 라딘의 사망은 알 카에다의 중요한 지도력과 그의 아버지와의 상징적 연관성을 박탈할 뿐만 아니라 그룹의 중요한 운영 활동도 저해한다"고 말했다.

CNN은 앞서 지난달 31일 미국이 함자 빈 라덴이 사망한 것으로 보고 있다고 보도했다. 당시 이 작전을 알고 있던 두 명의 국방부 관계자는 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 빈 라덴이 최소 몇 달 전에 살해됐다고 말했다.

"The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives al-Qa'ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group," the President said in the statement.

CNN previously reported on July 31 that the US believed Hamza bin Laden was dead. At that time, two defense officials with knowledge of the operation told CNN that bin Laden had been killed at least several months prior.
