Over the years a total of nine players from Korea have won ITTF World Tour Men Singles titles, three members of that illustrious group, in the guise of Jung Youngsik, Joo Saehyuk and Lee Sangsu, were on duty in the opening round of the Men뭩 Singles event at the 2016 ITTF World Tour German Open in Berlin on Thursday 29th January.

All were seeded, all suffered defeats; at the first hurdle Korean interest ended.

Defeats

Jung Youngsik, the no.10 seed, suffered defeat at the hands of Qatar Li Ping (12-10, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 3-11, 11-5).

At the same time, the most experienced member of the group, Joo Saehyuk, the no.12 seed, was beaten by Croatia Andrej Gacina (11-2, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9). The defeat of the master defender was realised some three hours after Lee Sangsu, the no.15 seed, had found the Japanese pen-holder, Kaii Yoshida, too hot to handle. He was beaten in five games (8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7).

Tradition Prevails

Success for one player, against the odds, who keeps the traditional Asian style of play by exercising dynamic forehands alive; the one other upset in the opening round of the Men뭩 Singles event was caused by another of a similar ilk.

Poland Wang Zengyi, different to Kaii Yoshida in that he rifles forehands using short pimpled rubber as opposed to Kaii Yoshida who uses reversed smooth rubber to practise his art, accounted for Singapore뭩 Gao Ning, the no.16 seed (12-10, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8).

Ma Long

Four upsets but amongst the very elite names it was success.

China Ma Long set the example by beating Denmark Jonathan Groth in four straight games (11-2, 11-6, 11-7, 11-3); the reigning World champion, whilst respecting his adversary showed no mercy.

y opponent had progressed through the qualification stage which showed he was competitive, said Ma Long. was prepared for some difficulties but I satisfied with my performance.

Comprehensive Wins

Success for Ma Long; there were also successes for his colleagues Zhang Jike, Fang Bo and Yan An.

Zhang Jike, the no.3 seed, accounted for Panagiotis Gionis of Greece (11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4) to underline his intentions, a performance which pleased Xiao Zhan, his erstwhile coach.

am satisfied with his overall performance today, said Xiao Zhan. e is suffering from a pain in the waist.

Impressive from Zhang Jike, it was the same from Fang Bo, the no.7 seed, who overcame Russia Alexander Shibaev (5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5) and from Yan An, the no.14 seed, who defeated Japan Masataka Morizono (6-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-4, 11-9).

Authoritative Performances

Likewise, amongst the principal names, there were authoritative performances from Portugal뭩 Marcos Freitas, Chinese Taipei뭩 Chuang Chih-Yuan and Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus.

Marcos Freitas, the no.5 seed, beat Yuto Muramatsu (11-7, 11-4, 11-7, 13-11); Vladimir Samsonov, the no.8 seed, defeated Tiago Apolonia, like Marcos Freitas from Portugal (11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8, 11-7), whilst Chuang Chih-Yuan, the no.6 seed, overcame Nigeria뭩 Quadri Aruna (11-8, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8).

Omar Assar Test Dimitrij Ovtcharov

Second round places booked by visitors; the host nation leading two players also advanced; for Timo Boll, the no.4 seed, it was a comfortable passage, for Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the no.2 seed, quite the reverse.

Timo Boll beat Croatia Frane Kojic in four straight games (11-1, 11-4, 11-6, 11-4); conversely, Dimitrij Ovtcharov needed the full seven to halt the advance of Egypt Omar Assar (8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, 15-17, 9-11, 11-7).

Success for Hong Kong

Meanwhile, in the remaining first round Men Singles contests, Hong Kong Wong Chun Ting and Tang Peng enjoyed success, as did Japan Koki Niwa.

Wong Chun Ting, the no.9 seed, beat Japan Kenta Matsudaira (11-8, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8); Tang Peng, the no.13 seed, defeated Austria Chen Weixing (11-9, 15-13, 16-14, 11-5), whilst Koki Niwa, the no.11 seed, also ended Austrian hopes. He beat Stefan Fegerl (6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-4, 11-5).
