BMW IBSF World Cup, two-man bobsleigh: Yunjong Won and Rico Peter take joint first, Alexander Kasjanov finishes in third in Whistler

Whistler (RWH) The first two-man bobsleigh race at the BMW IBSF World Cup in Whistler (CAN) ended with the closest ever result in World Cup history.

The top spot was shared by the Swiss team of Rico Peter/Thomas Amrhein and the Korean pairing of Yunjong Won/Youngwoo Seo. This win saw the Koreans open yet another new chapter in bobsleigh history: Their result on the ice track from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games was the first ever victory by a bobsleigh team from Korea, the host of the next Winter Olympics, and also took the pair into the lead in the overall World Cup rankings. Won and Seo dedicated their historic win to former head coach Malcom “Gomer” Lloyd, who passed away at the beginning of January. Alexander Kasjanov/Aleksei Pushkarev of Russia were just one hundredth of a second behind in third, giving them their first ever World Cup podium finish.

Host team Chris Spring of Canada celebrated his best two-man bobsleigh result in two years in front of a home crowd. The seventh-place finisher at the Olympics came in fifth in Whistler, achieving the same time as defending World Cup Champion Oskars Melbardis of Latvia.

Following the fifth of eight races in the BMW IBSF World Cup 2015/2016, Yunjong Won (1001 points) replaced Francesco Friedrich (GER) in the top spot in the overall rankings. The World Champion was in third place halfway through proceedings in Whistler; however, an injury prevented him from competing in the final run which meant that he fell to sixth place in the overall rankings. Second place in the rankings is held by Nico Walther (GER, 898), who finished twelfth in Whistler, and Rico Peter (SUI, 889) is in third.
