반얀나무는 한없이 넓게넓게 퍼져나가 자라기로 유명하다. 이 나무는 흔히 세상에서 가장 넓은 면적을 차지한 나무라는 타이틀로 유명다. 세계 최고는 "Thimmamma Marrimanu" 라는 놈으로, 무려 19,107m2를 차지하고 있으며, 기네스북에도 올라가 있다. 

한편 두번째로 큰 그레이트 반얀의 경우 그 면적은 14,500m2 

숲처럼 보이지만 그게 다 하나의 나무다. 반얀나무의 특징상 지금도 계속 넓어지고 있다. 이 나무를 둘러서 도로를 둥글게 만들어 놓았는데 그 도로 밖으로까지 퍼져나가고 있다고...

Thimmamma Marrimanu, is listed as the world's largest Banyan tree in the Guinness World Records in 1989. The tree is situated about 35 km from Kadri Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. Its branches spread over 5 acres, with a canopy of 19,107 square metres
