SAVANNA-SABULA BRIDGE DEMOLITION
The 86-year old Savanna-Sabula Bridge that connects Illinois to Iowa over the Mississippi River was taken down last weekend in a picture-perfect display of demolition.
March 12, 2018
Celebrated at Bridge Fest-The Last Drive, the truss bridge, built in 1932 and known for its narrow lanes and metal grid bridge deck, was put out of service last November. It had been the crossing for U.S. Route 52, as well as the the terminus of both Iowa Highway 64 and Illinois Route 64.

Route 52 will now cross the Mississippi River on the new $80.6 million Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial steel-tied arch bridge. The new bridge's deck is now twice as wide as the old at 40 feet across with two wider lanes and shoulders. It will serve as a key link for interstate commerce in the Midwest. The next closest bridge across the Mississippi River is Illinois 136, 20 miles to the south in Fulton.
