VIDEOS: OROVILLE SPILLWAYS PHASE 2 UPDATES

February has been a productive month for Oroville Dam's main spillway reconstruction. As the planned May 1 start date for the second phase get closer, prep work is readying the site.

The $500 million project, headed by Kiewit Construction, has been stabilized so that heavy winter rains would not further degrade it over the winter.

the lower spillway is removed for a new road. Work continues between the emergency spillway weir and cut-off-wall, prepping the ground for the splashpad.

Phase 2 includes repairing the emergency spillway which will now have a concrete buttress and splashpad in front of it, with an underground cut-off wall to block uphill erosion that was part of last February's damage.

The cut-off wall, called a secant pile wall, is formed by constructing intersecting reinforced concrete piles. Holes are drilled into the bedrock, in this case up to 65-feet deep. The secant piles are reinforced with either steel rebar or beams and are filled with concrete. A concrete beam is then poured to link the pillars together.

Work includes removal of the 730 feet at the top of the upper chute from the radial gates, and replacement with steel-reinforced structural concrete.

A 2.5-foot layer of steel-reinforced structural concrete will be placed over the over 1,050 feet of roller compacted concrete in the middle chute, and the roller compacted concrete walls of that section will be replaced with structural concrete.
