A three-year history of the construction of the North East’s biggest civil engineering project has been revealed in a new video.
The £120M road bridge across the River Wear is called the Northern Spire, inspired by its striking design, including a 105m steel pylon centrepiece which was constructed offsite. It was officially named in December, with the structure previously known as the New Wear Crossing.
It is being delivered by a Farrans Victor Buyck joint venture (FVB), with BuroHappold providing services including bridge detailed design, engineering and civil structures, lighting, ground engineering, project management. Roughan O’ Donovan are the project’s consulting engineers.
FVB project director Stephen McCaffrey said: “We have a lot of work to do over the coming weeks and the key thing for us is that a lot of that work is weather dependent. We need dry weather to finish off activities such as the final road surfacing. This means that while we’re confident of opening later in the spring, it’s too early to set a definite date.”
The three-span cable-stayed bridge has a span of 148m.
The deck is supported by 28 cable stays, with 674 precast concrete road deck panels joined together by concrete being poured between them, connecting them to the steel bridge deck underneath.
