Abe meets Pence

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and visiting US Vice President Mike Pence are holding talks in Tokyo.

Pence is visiting Tokyo on his way to South Korea, where he will attend the PyeongChang Olympics opening ceremony on Friday.

On Wednesday afternoon, Pence visited Abe at his office in Tokyo. He was greeted by a Ground Self-Defense Force honor guard. Abe and Pence began their meeting shortly after 3 PM.

Security issues, such as North Korea and the situation in the East and the South China Seas, are likely the main topics of their discussions.

The meeting comes amid the growing conciliatory mood between North and South Korea before the Olympics open on Friday.

Abe hopes to confirm with Pence that Japan and the United States will continue to work closely together along with South Korea to boost pressure on North Korea to get Pyongyang to give up its nuclear and missile programs.
