An £18bn project created an estimated 25,000 jobs and 1,000 apprentices is very probably the biggest building project ever by a Gloucester-based business.

Arguments for and against nuclear power aside for a moment – revel if you will in the astonishing figures behind EDF Energy’s mammoth build.
Headquarters in Barnwood, the company’s Hinkley Point C nuclear power station site covers about 170 hectares (420 acres. One international rugby pitch is roughly one hectare) and is fast taking shape on the banks of the Bristol channel in North Somerset.
From its Gloucester base it also controls a vast energy network across the UK.
Over the course of the project EDF expects 60 per cent of the construction value to be awarded to UK companies resulting, it argues, in £1bn a year invested in the UK economy.
It estimated £100m will be invested in the regional economy during peak construction and £40 million per year will go into the regional economy over the lifetime of the project (reaching over £2bn).
Those who follow these things will realise the project is actually being delivered on behalf of EDF Energy by the firm’s Chinese partners, CGN.
In the last edition of the Gloucestershire Top 100 Businesses supplement, which ranks firms by turnover, the business was listed as the second largest in the county (£3.7blln) with 2,000 staff in the county and 200 apprentices.
