The South Korean military is considering developing various kinds of ballistic missiles to better counter North Korean threats after Seoul and Washington agreed to lift the restriction on the payloads of domestic missiles.

A military source on Thursday said South Korea's military will develop superprecision, high-powered and diversified missiles that can carry warheads with a payload of up to two tons. The source said they can be used as a major component of the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation(KMPR) plan aimed at incapacitating North Korea’s key facilities.

The missiles, however, will be limited to a range of 800 kilometers in accordance with the current bilateral accord with the United States.

Despite the existing cap on missile range, the South Korean military is said to have assessed they will be able to develop new "monster missiles" by increasing the payloads that can be twice or three times as powerful as the U.S. GBU-28 laser-guided “bunker busting” bomb.

President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed earlier in the week to lift Washington’s payload restrictions during their summit in Seoul.
