NORTH Korea has been observed moving what appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) towards its west coast, South Korea’s Asia Business Daily reports, citing an unidentified intelligence source.

The rocket started moving overnight, a day after North Korea’s sixth nuclear test, and was spotted moving at night to avoid surveillance, the report said.

North Korea has launch facilities for its missile program on its west coast.

South Korea’s defence ministry said they were unable to confirm the contents of the report. The ministry said in parliament that North Korea was considered ready to launch more missiles, including ICBMs, at any time.

It comes amid speculation the rogue nation may be planning to fire an ICBM as early as this weekend when the republic celebrates its foundation on September 9.

ECONOMIC INTERESTS AT RISK

Australia will support tougher economic sanctions on North Korea when the US calls for them at the United Nations next week.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop confirmed the nation’s support in an update to Parliament today where she also revealed the Australian Government has lodged formal protests about North Korea’s actions to its embassies in Jakarta, New York and Seoul.

Australia was also adding its voice to pressure on the regime in the UN.

“Given that North Korea is threatening the international nuclear non-proliferation regime that has governed the use of nuclear technology since 1970, we instructed our ambassador in Vienna to make a statement overnight at an extraordinary session of the comprehensive test ban treaty commission, and we demanded that North Korea cease its ballistic and nuclear weapons programs and that it abide by international law and international norms,” Ms Bishop told Parliament.
