The science of SINKHOLES: Video uses toy cars and sand to show how the dangerous events can swallow vehicles
Most natural sinkholes happen in areas with large deposits of carbonate rocks
Over long periods of time, groundwater flowing can dissolve the rock
This creates tunnels, which allow water to flow faster like it would through a pipe
The tunnels create a space for soil to wash away into, and any soil overlying the void runs the risk of eroding away, eventually caving in and leading to a sinkhole
But many sinkholes are human-created - just like a cave in bedrock can act like a pipe for groundwater to carry away soil, pipes underground can do this too

Sinkholes can spell danger for passing cars - if a driver is unlucky enough to fall into one, he or she may be seriously injured or killed.
Sinkholes occur because of the interaction between water beneath the ground and soil erosion - a process that moves soil and rock.

A new video reveals how and why sinkholes form, and while they're sometimes caused by natural processes, many sinkholes are human-created.
