Kuwait and South Korea have inked a $41m (KWD12.5m) contract pertaining to the planning and design of Saad Al-Abdullah City.

The deal was signed by representatives from Korea Land & Housing Corporation and Yasser Abul, Kuwait's Minister of State for Housing Affairs and Minister of State for Services.

Abul told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the contract would be implemented over two years, and represents an example of successful partnership and cooperation between nations.

The minister was also described Saad Al-Abdullah City as the first eco-friendly and smart city in the Middle East, citing its implementation of modern technology.

The contract was signed following detailed talks, and a visit by Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah of Kuwait to South Korea. The visit was conducted in a bid to boost bilateral ties between the two countries, especially in terms of housing welfare and new cities.

Director general of Kuwait's Public Authority for Housing Welfare, Bader Al-Waqayyan, said the contract covers the technical, economic, environmental, and scientific studies of the smart city, as well as the structural chart and the design of its road network.

The total area of the project is 64.42km2, with 30,000 housing units, he added.
