Germany to establish independent rail accident investigator
DB AG/Uwe Miethe
Written by Quintus Vosman
THE German federal government is preparing draft legislation proposing the establishment of an independent rail accident investigation body.
If approved by the German parliament, the new law will amend the German Federal Railway Act (AEG) and the Federal Act on Railway Traffic Administration (BEVVG) and bring the country’s rail accident investigation structure into line with European legislation, particularly European Directive 2004/49/EU on railway safety.
At present responsibility for investigating railway accidents still rests primarily with the federal Ministry of Transport, which is supported by an operational department of the Federal Railway Authority (EBA).
