The terrifying robots set to mine the seabed: Machines to search for gold and other precious metals on the ocean floor

New deep-sea robots will be sent to mine mineral deposits in the deep ocean in 2019. As land-based mineral stores are becoming depleted, the ocean floor is becoming a more attractive mining prospect, containing gold, copper and other precious metal deposits used to make electronics, renewable energy tools and even medical imaging machines. But deep-sea excavation may have a negative impact on deep ocean marine life, as robot mining may destroy their homes and disturb the sensitive species. The Canadian mining company Nautilus Minerals plans to send robots (pictured left) to mine deposits rich in copper and gold in the waters of Papua New Guinea. Pictured bottom right is a diagram of how the mining process would work. The robots would first gather the mineral sediment on the seafloor, and the material would then be transported to a Production Support Vessel at the surface via a pump.

    2019년 파푸아누기에 처음으로 투입될 예정이다.

광물 자원 중에는 태양열 전지 제조에 사용되는 것들도 있다.

    하지만 환경을 훼손시키는 문제도 있다.
