Tesla is extending unlimited Supercharging for cars ordered in the next 2 weeks

Back in November, Tesla announced that it is changing its policy of unlimited free Supercharging for all vehicles in 2017. The automaker said that for Teslas ordered after January 1, 2017, the unlimited free Supercharging would be replaced by 400 kWh of free Supercharging credits (roughly 1,000 miles) included annually.

Today, Tesla announced a 2-week extension during which potential buyers can still order a Model S or X and take advantage of the unlimited free Supercharging. The rule change will now apply to vehicles ordered after January 15. 

As we previously reported, the 400 kWh of Supercharger Credits annually is likely to be enough for most people’s driving habits, but if you plan to often use your Tesla for long distance travels, then unlimited free Supercharging is definitely worth it.

Of course, we say “free”, but it’s actually included in the price of the vehicle.

The new 2-week extension will be welcomed by customers who couldn’t confirm their orders before the year’s end.

All new Tesla Model S and X ordered before January 15 will be able to use the Supercharger at no cost other than the $0.40 per minute idle fee introduced last month, which has been introduced regardless of when the vehicle was delivered since it aims to make sure people use the Superchargers for charging and not just parking.

The company has yet to disclose the price per kWh of the Supercharger credits that will become the new standard, but Tesla did write in a statement that “prices may fluctuate over time and vary regionally based on the cost of electricity”. It also claimed that the Supercharger Network will “never be a profit center” and the new program is instead being implemented to finance the expansion of the network.

Tesla currently operates over 760 Supercharger stations across the world and it plans to significantly increase the number in 2017 ahead of the start of volume production of the Model 3. Additionally, Tesla is working on a new generation of its Supercharger with a much higher charging rate.
