A massive sinkhole swallows a 5-LANE road in Japan: 30ft deep void causes widespread chaos

• Parts of a main street collapsed in the heart of Fukuoka in southern Japan, creating a massive sinkhole
• The sinkhole, more than half the size of an Olympic pool, appeared in the middle of the business district 
• Sinkholes form in soluble rocks like limestone and are caused by the passage of weakly acidic rainwater
• City officials said it was likely linked to ongoing subway construction nearby, but this is under investigation

  8일 오전 일본 후쿠오카(福岡)현 후쿠오카시의 한 지하철역 앞 도로에 대형 싱크홀이 발생했다. 

일본 NHK에 따르면 이날 새벽 후쿠오카시 하카다(博多)구의 하카다 JR전철역 앞 도로가 갑자기 함몰되기 시작해, 현재 싱크홀의 크기는 5개 차선에 걸친 폭 15m에 이르는 것으로 알려졌다. 

지금까지 부상자는 없는 것으로 알려졌지만 주변 건물에 정전이 발생했으며, 현장 부근에서 가스 냄새가 나고 있어 경찰은 싱크홀 주변에 통행을 금지하고 조사를 벌이고 있다. 후쿠오카시 당국은 가스 누출 및 싱크홀 확산 우려 등에 현장 주변 건물 입주자들에게 피난권고를 발령했다. 

싱크홀이 발생한 곳 부근 지하에서는 이날 지하철 연장 공사를 위한 터널 굴착 공사가 이뤄지고 있었다. 경찰은 이 공사와 싱크홀의 관련성 여부에 대해 조사하고 있다. 터널 공사를 진행하던 작업원들은 이날 오전 5시쯤 공사 현장에 물이 흘러들어와 공사를 중단한 것으로 알려졌다.

Parts of a main street have collapsed in the heart of a major city in southern Japan creating a massive sinkhole and cutting off power, water and gas supplies to parts of the city.

Authorities said no injuries were reported from the pre-sunrise collapse in downtown Fukuoka, which created a sinkhole more than half the size of an Olympic pool in the middle of the business district.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation, Fukuoka officials said, but they linked it to ongoing subway construction nearby.
