In an elegant, figure-hugging purple Edition de Robe dress with a jaunty plum-coloured fedora hat, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau may have even carried off the honours over Kate’s blue Jenny Packham outfit on day one, although the Duchess won plaudits for the maple leaf detail on her Lock & Co hat.

Last week it emerged that Kensington Palace officials had sent a list of the Duchess’s outfits to the Prime Minister’s office to help avoid a colour clash over the next few days of engagements but, although Kate is a fashion icon, she may find it difficult competing with Sophie’s sense of style.

The royal couple’s tour is a 'match made in paparazzi heaven' along with the PM and his wife

Madame Trudeau, a 41-year-old former television reporter, has brought new glamour to her role since her husband carried his Liberal Party to a sweeping victory over Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper in October last year.

She has been described as the Kate Middleton of Canada and the country’s Globe and Mail newspaper described the royal couple’s tour as a “match made in paparazzi heaven, featuring Prince William, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and their equally telegenic families”.

Mr Trudeau, 44, the son of the late prime minister Pierre Trudeau, recalled that William and Kate, came to Canada as newlyweds in 2011. He joked: “As any parent travelling with children knows, it’s a whole different experience when you bring your family with you.

“I want to commend you and thank you for introducing our part of the world to Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Although let me caution you from my own experience, if they are anything like our kids, getting them back on the plane after a visit to our beautiful west coast will really be a challenge.”

In his own speech, William, 34, said: “Catherine and I are delighted to be back in Canada.

“When we were here last time, we had been married only three months. “The warm welcome that you gave us at that important moment in our lives meant a lot to us – and we have never forgotten it.

“That is why we are so pleased that George and Charlotte can be with us in Canada this time round, beginning their own lifetime of friendship with this wonderful country.”

He also recalled a 1998 visit to the west coast as “a shy teenager” and laughed: “A few of you remember it too well I think.” In a faltering accent, he apologised for his poor French: “It’s a little rusty, work with me.” he said to laughter.
