Malaysia and Thailand Agree on Preliminary Studies for HSR Link

Malaysia and Thailand Agree on Preliminary Studies for HSR Link :During a bilateral meeting that took place on 9 September 2016 Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha agreed for their countries to begin preliminary discussions on a possible High Speed Rail (HSR) link between capital cities Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

Najib Razak stated that “Malaysia welcomes the agreement from the Thai government to study the HSR link between KL and Bangkok. This can further improve connectivity between Malaysia and Thailand, and subsequently economic cooperation between the two countries.” He added that the HSR line could complement the planned link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Prayut Chan-o-cha stated that the HSR could help extend Thailand’s connectivity downwards to Singapore.

The new high speed line, approximately 350 km long, would be completed by 2026.
