태국 방콕에 독특한 형태의 빌딩이 모습을 드러냈다. 시내 상업타운에 건설된 77층짜리 '마하 나꼰(MahaNakhon) 빌딩이다. 물론 방콕 뿐 아니라 태국 최고 높이의 빌딩이다.
태국의 부동산업체인 페이스 디벨롭먼트 소유의 이 빌딩은 연면적 15만㎡, 높이 314.2ｍ다.
정방형 기둥 형태의 이 건물은 중앙부와 상층부에 울퉁불퉁한 띠가 있으며 벽돌로 쌓아 올린 건물 외벽에 중간중간 '이가 빠진' 듯한 형상을 하고 있다. 건축주는 이를 '픽셀화한 외관'(Pixelated facade)이라고 표현한다.
밤에는 이가 빠진듯한 곳에서 강렬한 불빛을 내뿜어 공상과학 영화에서나 나올법한 미래 건물의 모습을 연출한다.
이 건물은 베이징의 CCTV 방송국 본사 건물 설계자이기도 한 독일인 건축가 올레 스히렌이 설계했다.
지난해 세계건축박람회 '올해의 빌딩'으로 선정된 싱가포르의'인터레이스'(Interlace) 아파트도 그의 작품이다.
건물에 들어설 리츠칼튼 레지던스의 가격은 세계 최고가 수준인 것으로 알려졌다.

designed by ole scheeren, MahaNakhon is a 77-storey high-rise complex located in bangkok’s central business district. the scheme, which recently opened as thailand’s tallest building, also comprises a landscaped public plaza and a multi-level retail center, which includes restaurants and cafés. the skyscraper also accommodates 200 serviced apartments and a 150-room boutique hotel. a direct link to the chongnonsi BTS skytrain station is also provided.
buro ole scheeren’s 314 meter-tall design (1,030 feet) seeks to dismantle the typical tower and podium typology in order to create a skyscraper that gradually dissolves as it flows downwards. cascading indoor/outdoor terraces — accommodating retail and entertainment facilities at the base of the tower — have been conceived to evoke the shifting protrusions of a mountain landscape.
referred to as the ‘cube’, an adjacent freestanding seven-storey structure with corresponding terraces creates an expansive outdoor atrium. in turn this forms a network of social, dining, and leisure spaces that serve both residents and the public. at the front of the tower, MahaNakhon square is designed as a public plaza for planned and spontaneous cultural events.
