약 320만 년 전에 살았던 초기인류의 일종이자 ‘루시’란 이름으로 널리 알려진 여성 원인(猿人)은 나무에서 떨어져 죽었다는 연구 결과를 미국 등의 연구팀이 29일 자 영국 과학지 네이처(인터넷판)에 발표했다.
연구팀은 나무 위에서만이 아니라 지상에서의 생활도 시작하게 되면서 나무타기 능력이 저하돼 나무에서 떨어질 위험성이 커졌을 가능성도 있다고 했다.
루시는 1974년에 에티오피아에서 발견된 아파르 원인(오스트랄로피테쿠스 아파렌시스) 화석에 붙여진 애칭이다. 전신 골격 중 약 40%가 발견돼 초기인류를 대표하는 화석 중 하나이다.
연구팀은 이번에 CT 등을 사용해 루시의 뼈를 상세하게 분석한 결과 루시는 높은 곳에서 떨어져 골절했다고 봤다. 상처의 상태, 상처가 나은 흔적이 없는 점 등을 볼 때 다친 것은 죽기 직전이었던 것으로 추정된다고 했다.
연구팀의 추측으로는 루시는 발부터 지면으로 떨어져 팔과 가슴, 머리 등이 땅에 부딪혔다. 장기에 입은 손상 등이 원인으로 루시는 죽은 듯하다. 약 12m를 넘는 높이에서 떨어졌을 가능성도 있다고 한다.【교도통신】
