The LRT3 has been developed as part of the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley Land Public Transport Masterplan. It will form a key part of an ongoing project to extend the country’s rail network to more than two million people by 2020. The total length of LRT3 will be 37km, of which 35km will be elevated and the remaining 2km will run underground. The line will connect the districts of Bandar Utama and Johan Setia. Both districts are in the west of Kuala Lumpur.

Following the success of the Jakarta Metro, SYSTRA will replicate that system’s U-shaped viaduct and implement it as the first of its kind in Malaysia. SYSTRA will deliver the design of the viaduct, as well as the layout of the underground section of the system and the depot layout. The total plan will encompass the railway system for the whole line, including operational studies, rolling stock and a comprehensive range of interfaces. SYSTRA will also support local consultants who will carry out detailed design studies.

Kuala Lumpur’s light rail system celebrated the opening of the extended line linking Sri Petaling to Kinrara in March 2016. Bombardier Transportation also announced that their INNOVIA Metro 300 trainsets are undergoing testing on the Kelana Jaya line, increasing both capacity and safety. The investment in the city’s rail transit infrastructure, installing cutting-edge technology in both rolling stock, signalling and track infrastructure, is hoped to ease congestion on the roads and improve safety and environmental efficiency in Kuala Lumpur’s transportation sector. The improvements to the light-rail system are taking place alongside the creation of a new high-speed rail linking Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.
