In International Construction’s April 2016 issue, KHL has released its annual Yellow Table ranking of the world’s top 50 construction equipment manufacturers, which provides valuable insight into the industry and the global economy.
According to KHL, with global commodity prices and slowdowns in many emerging economies, revenues for the world’s 50 largest construction equipment manufacturers fell 16.2% to US$133 billion in 2015, the lowest since 2009. This impacted China’s largest construction equipment manufacturers most, with all of the Chinese companies in the Yellow Table dropping this year in the rankings when compared to 12 months ago. Plus, drops among Chinese companies were some of the biggest declines for any company in the ranking.
Here’s a look at the world’s top five construction equipment manufacturers, as published in the 2016 Yellow Table ranking:
#1. Caterpillar (U.S.) – 2015 rank: #1

Caterpillar has spent 14 years now at the top of the Yellow Table, although they did have a drop in construction equipment revenues from US$28.3 billion in 2014 to US$24.1 billion in 2015. Nevertheless, Caterpillar experienced a 0.3% increase in share of the revenue of the Top 50, up to 18.1%.
#2. Komatsu (Japan) – 2015 rank: #2

As Caterpillar has retained the top spot in the Yellow Table for 14 years, Komatsu has been right behind it at the no. 2 position the whole time, and that certainly didn’t change in 2015. The Japanese company experienced a drop of US$2.8 billion in construction equipment sales in 2015, down to US$14 billion, which resulted in a 0.1% decrease in the share of the total (to 10.5%).
#3. Terex (U.S.) – 2015 rank: #5
U.S. company Terex jumped ahead to the no. 3 position on the Yellow Table this year, up from the no. 5 position last year. However, while their ranking rose, their construction equipment sales dropped, much like Komatsu and Caterpillar. Terex’s 2015 sales came in at US$6.54 billion, or a 4.9% share of the total—a 0.3% increase when compared to the previous year.
#4. Hitachi (Japan) – 2015 rank: #3
Caterpillar and Komatsu have been placed #1 and #2 on the Yellow Table since its inception. The companies in positions three to seven—Terex, Hitachi, Liebherr, Volvo and John Deere—have a similar share of the Yellow Table (4.5 to 4.9%) and frequently shift positions.
Hitachi dropped in the ranking by one, but it only just missed it. The Japanese company had US$6.50 billion in construction equipment sales in 2015. This translates to a 4.9% share of the total—on par with where it was on the 2015 Yellow Table.
#5. Liebherr (Germany) – 2015 rank: #6
Liebherr re-entered the top 5 this year, after dropping to #6 on the Yellow Table last year. The company had 4.7% share of the total in 2015, with US$6.2 billion in construction equipment sales.
