Renovations to a factory in Pyongyang include the addition of a large solar panel array on the roof, footage from North Korea’s foreign news service Uriminzokkiri shows.

 

In the video, an additional building is being added to the Ryuwon Shoe Factory and appears ready to be fitted with a large number of solar panels.

 

“(With) the help of the National Academy of Science, the factory is to be intensively constructed with the solar panels on the roof,” the narrator says.

 

The footage goes onto to show a team of four adding the first set of panels. Small mounts for other panels cover the roof, while in a later shot a large number of solar panels can be seen resting against a back wall.

According to WikiMapia, the factory is located in west Pyongyang. Updated satellite imagery shows a facility with additional buildings being added on either between July last year and May this year.

 

While small scale solar panels have become an increasing frequent sight around the DPRK, even in rural areas, larger solar installations consisting of more than a few panels are rarer.

 

Some news reports have indicated there are hundreds of panels in certain cities, like Kaesong, but footage and photographs have remained more elusive.

 

Nonetheless recent North Korea media coverage often points to new solar energy developments. Footage from May this year showed what appeared to be ongoing domestic solar research and development.
