Dubai to construct $544m waste-to-energy plant

Dubai Municipality announced it will establish the Middle East's largest solid waste-to-energy plant at the end of June. 

 

The $544.5m (AED2bn) plant is situated in Warsan District 2.

Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said that the project's implementation will take three years.

The plant will be operational in Q2 2020.

Its first phase will see the receipt of 2,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per day to produce 60MW of power.

The facility is in line with the national agenda to effect a 75% reduction in the emirate's landfills by 2021, in addition to protecting the environment from methane gas emitted by landfills, according to WAM.

Engineer Essa Al Maidoor, Deputy-Director of Dubai Municipality, said the waste incineration project is the first of the four projects to produce green energy.

He added that Dubai Municipality, in co-ordination with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, conducted studies to produce 7% of Dubai's total energy from clean energy sources by 2020.
