Bahrain’s state run oil firm, Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), has opened the bidding process for an expansion project at its Sitra refinery.

The refinery currently has a processing capacity of 260,000 barrels per day, but BAPCO plans to increase this to 360,000 bpd in due course.

The expansion project is expected to cost around US$5 billion and a decision on when to implement this project is expected in the coming months.

In addition to the expansion of the refineries processing capacity, the project will also see BAPCO establish new petrochemical production units at the site. BAPCO also plans to build a 70km pipeline to connect the Sitra site to the Ras Tanura refinery in Saudi Arabia.

In a report by The National, several companies are identified as having expressed an interest in the project, including Japan’s JGC Corp, South Korea’s GS, Technip, Tecnicas Reunidas and Samsung Engineering.

The deadline for companies to submit their bids is the 5th October 2016, with a decision on contract awards expected in the first quarter of 2017.
