The Korean national team brought home the winning cup at the ninth International Abilmpics, held in Bordeaux, France, this year. This was the seventh overall win for Team Korea, and the sixth consecutive victory for the nation.
Despite being up against strong rivals like Taiwan and China, Korea secured first place with 14 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze medals. In second place, Taiwan won 5 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze. China, in third place, took 5 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Korean contestants compete for gold medals in newly-introduced events like IT (top), cosmetics (middle) and eyeglass repair during the ninth International Abilympics.
This year, the International Abilympic Federation introduced information technology (IT), welding, cosmetics and eyeglass repair as new events. Korean competitors managed to win gold in all the new events. It also secured its sixth consecutive gold in the woodcraft category, which the nation has dominated since the 1995 fourth International Abilympics in Australia.
This year's event began with an opening ceremony on March 23, and ran for four days, with 510 contestants from 35 countries in attendance. Of the 48 different vocational categories, Korean contestants competed for medals in 39 events.
President Park Geun-hye said, "I congratulate the Korean national team for its seventh overall win at the event, and hope that all the contestants will use their passion and drive to become leaders of our community."
