루이지애나주 보시에피리시 단대 1년생 사라 후덱 투수가, 2월에 미시시피주에서 열린 힌드 단대전에서 대학 첫 승리를 거뒀다. 현지 신문 취재에 “어떤 상황에서도 던질 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶었다”고 자랑스럽게 말했다.

131km의 직구에 커브, 체인지업 등을 구사하는 좌완. 2회 2/3이닝을 던져 내야 안타 3개를 내줬으나 삼진 3개를 뺏으며 5-4 승리에 공헌했다. 기념비적인 승리에 “포수와 뒤를 지키는 선수들을 신뢰하고 있다”고 말했다.

부친 존 후덱은 미국 메이저리그 애스트로스에서 주로 구원투수로 활약하고, 1994년에는 올스타전 멤버로도 선출됐다. 스포츠 전문잡지 스포츠 일러스트레이티드(전자판)에 따르면, 남자뿐인 팀에 도전하는 딸을 “잭 로빈슨에 가까운 일을 하고 있다”며 전설적인 첫 흑인 메이저리거를 빗대 칭찬했다.

Sarah Hudek won a gold medal with Team USA at the Pan Am Games last summer, and earned her first college baseball win with Bossier Parish Community College earlier this week.

Throw like a girl, win like a girl.

With her curveball, cutter and 82 mph fastball, Sarah Hudek pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in relief and earned her first win at the college baseball level on Wednesday.

"I didn't want to get to that, but those are the kinds of situations I live for," Hudek told the Shreveport (Louisiana) Times after Bossier Parish Community College beat Hinds Community College in the second game of a doubleheader, 5-4. "I had a lot of confidence in my catcher, Luis Santiago, and my defense behind me."

Hudek is believed to be the only woman playing college baseball, but she is no stranger to the spotlight. Last summer, she helped Team USA win the gold medal at the Pan Am Games, pitching 3 1/3 innings in the finale.

The daughter of former MLB All-Star John Hudek, she was good enough to earn a scholarship to play baseball, and she proved it Wednesday. She gave up three hits -- all infield singles -- in 2 2/3 innings.

"That was really the only trouble she saw in her 2 2/3 innings pitched to pick up her first win," BPCC head coach Aaron  Vorachek told the Shreveport Times. "She gave up three infield singles and she pitched well."
