한국 여자컬링 대표팀이 세계 최강 캐나다에 극적인 역전승을 거두는 파란을 일으켰다.
스킵(주장) 김지선(29·사진), 이슬비(28), 엄민지(25), 김은지(26), 염윤정(28·이상 경기도청)으로 이뤄진 여자컬링 대표팀은 24일 캐나다 스위프트커런트에서 열린 2016 포드 세계여자선수권대회에서 세계 랭킹 1위인 캐나다를 8-7로 꺾었다.
캐나다는 2014 소치동계올림픽 금메달을 포함해 5차례의 올림픽에서 모두 메달을 획득해 명실상부한 컬링 최강국이다.
반면 한국의 세계랭킹은 10위다. 한국 컬링이 세계선수권에서 캐나다를 꺾은 것은 남녀를 통틀어 이번이 처음이다.
대표팀은 7엔드까지 4-4로 팽팽히 맞섰지만, 8엔드에서 캐나다에 3점을 내줘 패색이 짙었다. 그러나 9엔드에서 2점을 얻어 6-7로 추격했고, 마지막 10엔드에서도 2점을 추가해 1점 차 짜릿한 역전극을 연출했다.
여자 컬링 대표팀은 캐나다전에 앞서 열린 핀란드전에서도 9-6으로 승리해 4승 5패로 12개 팀 중 순위를 9위에서 7위로 두 계단 끌어올렸다. 대회가 막바지에 다다른 가운데 한국은 4위까지 주어지는 플레이오프 출전은 물 건너갔지만, 25일 이탈리아와 스위스를 상대로 마지막 일전을 치른다.
신동호 감독은 “이번 대회를 위해 정말 열심히 했다”면서 “끝까지 포기하지 않겠다”고 다짐했다.

Canada continued their unbeaten run in Sunday (20 March) evening's fifth session of round-robin play at the Ford World Women's Curling Championship 2016 in Swift Current, Canada, when they beat the USA by 10-2 in just six ends.
the Canadians took control early when, in the first end, their skip Chelsea Carey tapped one of her own stones into position to open the scoring with four points. USA never recovered from this blow and conceded early.
In this session, Switzerland faced Denmark and in the sixth end of this game, Switzerland's skip Binia Feltscher played an angle-raise to score two points and take a 5-3 lead. In the seventh Denmark's skip Lene Nielsen hit-out a Swiss stone with her own last stone to score two points and level the game, at 5-5, but eventually, in the tenth end, Feltscher drew her last stone into the house to score the one point needed to give Switzerland a 7-6 win.
Germany faced Scotland and in the third end of this game Germany's skip Daniela Driendl hit-out a Scottish stone to score one point and level the game at 2-2. But, the Scots moved into a clear lead in the next end when their skip Eve Muirhead tapped-up one of her own stones to score three points for a 5-2 lead. The Scots eventually won by 10-3.
In what was a tight game between Korea and Sweden, Korea brought in Ji Sun Kim as skip and she hit-out a Swedish counter in the eighth end to score three and take a 7-4 lead. Sweden responded in the ninth end when their fourth player Maria Prytz played a raise double take-out to count two points that reduced Korea's lead to 7-6, but Korea went on to win by 8-6.
