Even for experienced bridge builders, floating bridges without foundations or bridge piers are extremely rare. For over 50 years, the longest floating bridge in the world has connected downtown Seattle with the northern communities on the other side of Lake Washington, which is connected to the Pacific Ocean via a series of canals. Until now, the old bridge has bravely withstood severe storms, the waves, and the last major earthquake in 2001. But it has become dilapidated, and the impact on it from the steadily increasing volume of heavy-duty traffic and the enormous loads involved is clear to see in many places.
