Dubai Metro extension to start 'within months'

by Ashleigh McGinley on Mar 9, 2016

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed construction of the 14.5km-long extension of Dubai Metro's Red Line will commence within the next few months.

While, a proposed expansion of the Green Line in the east of the city is set to commence early next year, according to an RTA official, as cited by Arabian Business.

Abdul Mohsin Ebrahim Younus, CEO, of RTA's Rail Agency, reportedly told the Middle East Rail Conference in Dubai that the extension of the Dubai Metro Red Line will commence by summer.

RTA is examining tenders from five firms, Gulf News reported, with the main contract to design and build the extension expected to be awarded "shortly".

Younus was quoted as saying: "Work on Route 2020 will begin immediately after the tender is awarded, which will be within the next few months.

"The extension will be ready before Expo 2020."

The estimated 16-minute route will start at the existing Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station and head towards the Expo 2020 site near Al Maktoum International Airport - passing through Discovery Gardens, Dubai Investment Park and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The majority of the route will be elevated, with 4km underground.

The route will feature five elevated and two underground stations.

According to Gulf News, Younus also unveiled details of the proposed extension to Dubai Metro's Green Line - a planned 20.6km new route that would start at Al Jaddaf station and take in Dubai Academic City via seven stations.

An RTA spokesperson declined to reveal further details about the plans.
